In my opinion, the best time for students to begin their prep for the SAT or ACT is the summer after their Sophomore year. That way, their prep will help them with their PSAT, which will then put them a step ahead in prepping for their SAT/ACT. Ideally they would continue their test prep and then take at least two more tests, one in May or June. The reason for this early effort is that if they are satisfied with either the verbal and/or the math scores from the Spring test then they can spend more effort over the summer preparing their college application essays and visiting college campuses. They may continue a light prep to raise the score of the section that still needs work, but they have the comfort of knowing they are about where they need to be with their test scores, and so there will be less overall stress. It also helps students determine what colleges are realistic to aim for.
